A head unit is the center-piece of your car stereo
system. This is usually located in the center of your car’s front console, and is the place where
you insert the cd and manipulate the controls.
The head unit is one of the most expensive pieces
of the car’s stereo system, which makes it a common target for thievery. Nowadays, most head units
are built into car alarm systems, so that any tampering that occurs with the system itself will set
off the alarm.
Most car cd players
have rather elaborate faceplates on them, especially after-market stereos. These faceplates serve a
variety of functions, but they can usually be removed in the event that you want to take it with
you.
This could be useful if you want to keep it from getting stolen,
as it is relatively easy to steal a faceplate, as opposed to very complicated to take a head unit.
Most new cars these days ship with head units on board. These head
units almost always include a cd player, an am/fm digital tuning radio, satellite radio of some sort, and usually
an input for plugging in an MP3 or some other portable device.
Some new head units have MP3 docks right on
the front, making connection with your iPod or other MP3 unit easy. One of the latest trends in car stereos is
the double din
stereo.
Another feature that is becoming popular on most head units these
days is built in memory. On brand new cars, you can now burn your cd collection right to the car so that you won’t
have to carry it with you.
This can be a huge way to make song selection more convenient and
even easier. Some of them are even voice activated, making them hands free.
